About

P.I.N.T. was formed early in 2007 by a collection of individuals who have become alarmed at the number of Irish public houses that are closing down or have closed down in recent years.

We believe that the Irish pub is and always has played an important role in Irish society, both urban and rural. We believe that the Government should recognise this fact and make it difficult for developers to destroy these establishmnets. We are not particularly in praise of the consumption of alcohol but believe that the pub, along with (the also endangered local shops and post offices) are places where people come together to talk, to socialise, to celebrate and even to mourn.

The many changes that have taken place in our country are not all neccesarily good ones. In general, Ireland is following a larger European trend where local small holders are being pushed out by large multi-national corporations.

We at P.I.N.T want to make clear that this is NOT what we are against neccesarily. What we are against is the wanton destruction of our older pubs, rich in history and character, by developers whose sole aim is usually to knock the buildings, sell the license and built apartments in their place. With the sole aim of lining their already deep pockets.

If the developers get their way and are not stopped, Irish punters will be forced to sup either at home or in gigantic, mostly soulless super-pubs, run usually, by the friends of our dear friends, the Developers. If we Irish people are not carefull, we will inhabit an Island that has little very soul indeed.

  1. Hello,
While searching for original pubs to visit in Ireland
I read with interest (and disappointment) about the demise of the true irish pub. Shame I remember when I came over there in 94 and found some cracking old bars come shops. What is happening over there sounds all too familiar to the rest of Britain. Property developers buying out or waiting for the owners to pop their clogs and build /convert 200 years of merriment to the history books. Ive been hoping for a property value crash for years! But thats not going to happen as the world becomes a village.
I dont know if you have seen the Camra heritage pubs list/national inventory and how they try and preserve pubs. Obviously the laws differ, its maybe even easier to eradicate a pub over there. Generally if there is only one pub left serving the community our councils tend to reject the 1st application. But pub companies have beeen known to deliberately run down a pub to make it unviable. Anyway enough rant I’m off to visit as many pubs as possible..while we can.
    Regards
    Nathan

  2. Hi Nathan,

Yes, it seems we are in pretty much the same boat. You have much stronger preservation laws in the U.K. though (so I thought) and we have no equivalent of the fine organisation CAMRA. Maybe soon. Our developers have run amuck. It seems thet have a free run. Maybe one day there will be crash like the one they just had in Spain and these guys will just sail off in their yachts.

What is happening in Ireland happened to you 30 years ago. There are still many fine pubs here but they are under REAL threat.

One day I would love to see some good English country pubs and drink real Ale. I used to work as a barman in London, which was good for a while but all the pubs are franchised and all look the same with the same fruit machine and menus.

Thanks for being the first Britischer to comment! Pass the word…

  3. Hi Ed, came across this on RTE site

  4. Hi Ed,
I see there’s no recent news, so you must have saved all the old smelly pubs…or else they’re all gone. I remember in Dublin (the actual capital) years ago these were the only pubs tourists wanted to go into. You never see them in the super pubs and for good reason. Here in Kinsale a new pub opened (no names) in a hotel and it’s like any feckin’ new bar in Cork, Galway, Dublin, London. I moved here to get away from that shite. The teens and posers like them but screw them. How will I forment violent trotskyite revolution in those places? I will not I tell you.

  5. YesJohn, things have been very lax lately with the site… and the revolution. Waiting for membership to build up currently. Currently a number than one is desirable. You get a t shirt and membership card….interested? We are picketing a closing pub in the coming week. It’s a priority for members to turn up. More coming on site soon. I see that new hotel got stopped in the centre of town… some-one seems to have a brain, that was a catastrophic idea for a tourist town with a considerable traffic problem already.
